CAREER

 

Senior University Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy of Values and Social Anthropology of the Faculty of Philosophy and Sciences of Education of the UPV/EHU, where he has developed his activities since 1994.

Degree in Philosophy and Sciences of Education, Philosophy section, from the UPV/EHU (1986), Degree in Law from the UPV/EHU (1995) and Doctor in Philosophy and Sciences of Education, Philosophy section, from the UPV/EHU (1996).

Doctor honoris causa from the Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco, Perú (2010) where he has worked as a lecturer, given talks and coordinated the “Identidad y Ciudadanía” research group (2009-2010). Similarly, he has taught courses in numerous Latin American universities, such as the Universidad Católica del Táchira in San Cristóbal, Venezuela (2009-2010), the Universidad Nacional Micaela Bastidas de Apurímac in Abancay, Perú (2008-2009), the Universidade Potiguar/Laureate International University in Natal, Brasil (2007-2008) or the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo in Morelia, México (2007-2008).

He has mainly developed his research activity in the field of analysis of the democratic political system.

In developing this work, he has taken part in numerous research projects and contracts, notable amongst which are the project Biblioteca Saavedra Fajardo de Pensamiento Político Hispánico (IV): Ideas que cruzan el Atlántico: la creación del espacio intelectual hispanoamericano, The Civic Constellation: a conceptual and argumentative study of the democratic experience, or Las retóricas de la democracia: los usos de la experiencia democrática en la argumentación moral y política, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, or the consolidated research group Parte Hartuz-Democracia participativa, funded by the Basque Government. He has also been the principal researcher in the projects of the UPV/EHU: Virtudes y valores en la retórica de las luces and Umorearen eta amorruaren bi paradigma diskurtsibo: Diderot eta Rousseau–Dos paradigmas discursivas del humor y de la ira: Diderot y Rousseau.

Together with this group activity, he has developed individual research on nationalism and democracy, political republicanism, identity and citizenship, and ethics and politics. He has also elaborated teaching materials and carried out numerous activities to improve quality and innovation in teaching. Similarly, since 2003 he has been the Director and Editor of the Limes Collection of Political Thought of the UPV/EHU, in the Basque language, which to date has published twenty-seven volumes.

He is an Honorary Member of the Illustrious College of Lawyers of Cusco, Peru (2009) and winner of the 2011 edition of the “Lehendakari Agirre” prize of the Foral Deputation of Gipuzkoa, a prize aimed at promoting, and providing incentive to research in the field of political science.

He is a member of different academic commissions. He has been Department Secretary of the Department of Philosophy of Values and Social Anthropology (2000-2003), in charge of different Doctoral Programs of the Department of Philosophy of Values and Social Anthropology of the Faculty of Philosophy and Sciences of Education of the UPV/EHU (1997-2000 and 2003-2009), and is currently responsible for the module “Theory of Political Ideas and Democratic System” within the University Master’s Degree on Democratic Society, State and Law of the UPV/EHU. He is a member of the Academic Commission of the University Master’s Degree on A Global World, and a member of the Academic Commission of the Doctoral Program: Philosophy in a Global World.

He is a member of the Editorial Board of Araucaria. Revista Iberoamericana de Filosofía, Política y Humanidades and of Res Publica. Revista de Filosofía Política. Similarly, he is a director of the Spanish Association of Ethics and Political Philosophy.
